Qualifying Conditions
To get your Maryland medical marijuana card, you’ll need to get a written certification from your doctor. That requires being examined by a physician registered with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission(MMCC) who finds that you meet one of the following medical marijuana qualifying conditions:
- Anorexia
- Cachexia (wasting syndrome)
- Severe or Chronic Pain
- Glaucoma
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Seizures, including those characteristic of epilepsy
- Severe and persistent muscle spasms
- Severe nausea
- Other severe chronic medical conditions for which other treatments have been ineffective
Obtaining Medical Cannabis
To purchase medical marijuana in Maryland, you’ll have to meet certain state qualifications and become a registered patient. The first step is to register with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC) to get the process started. At that time you’ll be asked to provide:
- A state-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, military ID or passport
- A valid email address
- The last four digits of your Social Security number
- A government issued photo similar to a passport photo
- A proof of Maryland residence such as a bank statement, utility bill, or government document
Non-Resident Medical Marijuana Patients
If you’re not a resident of Maryland, you can still register as a patient as long as you’re receiving medical treatment in-state. There are many non-resident medical marijuana patients in Maryland since Johns Hopkins and other nationally recognized medical centers treat hundreds of patients from all over the country every year.
Physician Certification Is Required
If you’ve been diagnosed with one or more of Maryland’s medical marijuana qualifying conditions, you’ll receive a Patient ID number to bring to a doctor so that you can complete your medical marijuana card application process.
Make certain you consult with a doctor who is currently registered with Maryland’s medical cannabis program (MMCC). You can find a list of Maryland licensed MMCC physicians on their web site.
Once you’ve done this, you’ll receive your official written state certification by mail. The fee is $50.
If you’re a veteran, be sure to mention your status. Your physician might offer you a discount based on your service to the country.
Minors Need Medical Marijuana Caregivers
People under the age of 18 in Maryland who need medical marijuana cards must register with at least one, but no more than two, caregivers. A caregiver needs to be 21 years of age or older and be a legal guardian to the minor medical marijuana patient.
Caregivers must be registered with the state of Maryland. Once registered, they’re allowed to help minors obtain their medical marijuana certification.
Purchasing Medical Marijuana in Maryland
After completing the necessary steps to get your certified medical marijuana card, you’ll receive an email containing a printable temporary card. Since the certification process can take about a month from start to finish, you’ll be happy to know that you can use your temporary card for dispensary purchases in the meantime!
